“…First, the preprint states that IIT is a "leading" and "well-established" theory of consciousness. In our own empirical work [4,5] we have shown data challenging these claims. A demonstrable pattern of these claims in public-facing media (which is unsupported by empirical data) has contributed to a phenomenon where non-experts view IIT as the theory of consciousness most likely to be true, while it ranks near the bottom among experts in the field [4].…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…However, a recent bibliometric evaluation of consciousness theories showed that approximately 3-9 of the citations were based on testing ground. The authors reported that out of five considered theories (global workspace, higher order, integrated information, local recurrent and quantum theories), the IIT had the highest increase in publication and citation count (Yeung et al, 2022).…”

“…I'm not sure about whether these somewhat subjective phrases are appropriate. In this context, it may be helpful to also discuss an alternative interpretation as supported by some empirical studies (19,20). Based on these studies there seems to be an argument to be made that one of the theories, IIT, was never really so well received within the scientific community, and that the current popularity may have something to do with hyperbolic promotion in the media.…”
