The impact of financial conflicts of interest: an open letter to the ARC-COGITATE research group

Abstract: This is an open letter to the ARC-COGITATE research group regarding the disclosure of conflicts of interest (COIs) as an issue of research ethics and its impact. The letter describes the background of the issue and discusses why it is important for these COIs to be clearly communicated not only in scientific publications, but also in public-facing media.

“…If IIT is either proven or perceived by the public as such, it will not only have a direct impact on clinical practice concerning coma patients 32 , but also a wide array of ethical issues ranging from current debates on AI sentience 13 and its regulation, to stem cell research, animal and organoid testing 18 , and abortion 19 . Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.
