Stillbirths: rates, risk factors, and acceleration towards 2030

Abstract: An estimated 2.6 million third trimester stillbirths occurred in 2015 (uncertainty range 2.4-3.0 million). The number of stillbirths has reduced more slowly than has maternal mortality or mortality in children younger than 5 years, which were explicitly targeted in the Millennium Development Goals. The Every Newborn Action Plan has the target of 12 or fewer stillbirths per 1000 births in every country by 2030. 94 mainly high-income countries and upper middle-income countries have already met this target, altho… Show more

“…At the multivariate level, stillbirth was significantly associated with low number of ANC attendance of pregnant women, low number of doses of IPT, and maternal anaemia. Contrary to findings of other studies, there was no association of stillbirth with mode of delivery, maternal blood pressure, parity, maternal infections including HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B [4,12,13].…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Our stillbirth estimate of 18.7 per 1000 live births was significantly lower than previous estimates for Kenya and SSA [ 8 , 46 ]. The rate declined by 6.7%, from 19.4 per 1000 live births in 2016 to 18.1 per 1000 live births in 2019.…”

“…We found a number of factors to be associated with stillbirth. The increased odds of stillbirth for older women found in our study have also been reported in systematic reviews on stillbirth . Consistent with the study by Chi et al .…”
