The Unifying Moral Dyad
Abstract: Do moral disagreements regarding specific issues (e.g., patriotism, chastity) reflect deep cognitive differences (i.e., distinct cognitive mechanisms) between liberals and conservatives? Dyadic morality suggests that the answer is "no." Despite moral diversity, we reveal that moral cognition--in both liberals and conservatives--is rooted in a harm-based template. A dyadic template suggests that harm should be central within moral cognition, an idea tested--and confirmed--through six specific hypotheses. Studie…

“…In addition, the evidence found corroborates previous research that pointed to the absence of a relationship between adherence to individualizing values and victim blaming for the moral injury infl icted (Schein & Gray, 2015); and they add that this relationship also does not occur when other variables, such as the victim's group membership and BJW, are considered.…”

“…The results obtained corroborate the previous study that indicated the predictive eff ect of binding values regarding derogation of the victim (Niemi & Young, 2016); and previous research that defends the notion that individualizing values are related to protection of the individual, and do not predict harm, such as secondary victimization (Schein & Gray, 2015). In addition, confi rming the results found in Study 1, these data highlight the eff ect of the victim's group membership on the phenomenon of blaming the woman for the sexual violence she suff ered.…”

“…This result is in line with findings that negative interpersonal consequences constitute the prototype of morality (Gray et al, 2014), and with findings that disciplinary techniques invoking interpersonal consequences are effective in shaping children's moral behaviors (Hoffman, 1975;Parke, 1969). This finding also vindicates the claim of dyadic theories of morality that perceived harmfulness most readily leads to moralization (e.g., Schein & Gray, 2015). “…However, our findings suggested that in a taboo trade-off framework, individualizing moral foundations could be equally inviolable for left, center, and right, and in this sense this common point of view could serve as counterweight in political debates. This is partially in line with Schein and Gray's (2015) finding that, despite moral diversity regarding specific issues (e.g., Patriotism, chastity), moral cognition in both liberals and conservatives is rooted in a harm-based template. Moreover, our findings also suggested the consideration that a compromise on binding moral foundations is seen differently by left, center, and right-wing participants, and thus sacred positions relating binding foundations may be representative of the most intractable political debates (in line with Graham & Haidt, 2010).…”
