Phylogeny of the Celastraceae inferred from phytochrome B gene sequence and morphology

Abstract: Phylogenetic relationships within Celastraceae were inferred using a simultaneous analysis of 61 morphological characters and 1123 base pairs of phytochrome B exon 1 from the nuclear genome. No gaps were inferred, and the gene tree topology suggests that the primers were specific to a single locus that did not duplicate among the lineages sampled. This region of phytochrome B was most useful for examining relationships among closely related genera. Fifty-one species from 38 genera of Celastraceae were sampled.… Show more

“…Whether this relationship may be casual or a result of both being correlated with a third and independent variable, such as body size (Martin and Palumbi 1993;Gillooly et al 2005), remains to be ascertained. However, we suggest evidence for covariation with rates of cladogenesis is weak, in agreement with Barraclough and Savolainen (2001). If the processes driving morphological change are sensitive to general evolutionary rates, the relationship between rates of change should be strongest for neutral substitutions (also see Omland 1997).…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…The analysis shows that all the tribes are closely linked. This fact corroborates the idea of a unified family, in line with recent workers who have included Hippocrateaceae within Celastraceae [2,6,7,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, 2 constitutes the first recorded example of this type of adduct isolated from a natural source. In addition, this phytochemical study supports the reassignment of the genus Goupia as reported by Simmons et al [11] since the metabolite profile of G. glabra does not relate to the usual compounds present in the Celastraceae.…”
