Multimodal classification of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment

Abstract: Effective and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), as well as its prodromal stage (i.e., mild cognitive impairment (MCI)), has attracted more and more attentions recently. So far, multiple biomarkers have been shown sensitive to the diagnosis of AD and MCI, i.e., structural MR imaging (MRI) for brain atrophy measurement, functional imaging (e.g., FDG-PET) for hypometabolism quantification, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for quantification of specific proteins. However, most existing research focuses … Show more

“…Our findings on MCI control comparison in relation to PCC and thalamic atrophy are in line with a recent study. [ 23 ] However, in contrast to previous studies,[ 16 24 ] we could not find any hippocampal atrophy in amnestic MCI compared to controls, possibly reflective of relative cognitive stability in our MCI. A longer period of follow-up is warranted to conclude on their evolution into multiple domain involvement versus early dementia.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…In contrast to Wee et al [] and other studies [Hinrichs et al, ; Young et al, ; Zhang et al, ], we did not observe a significant increase in the accuracy of the multimodal analysis when the MK‐SVM algorithm was used rather than the single modality analyses. When only two of the three modalities were used, for instance DTI data and GM volume, the results obtained were essentially the same.…”

“…The volume shrinkage of these regions causes difficulty in accomplishing the related tasks. These findings are consistent with previous studies [7], [8], [9], [15].…”
