Multichannel anodal tDCS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in a paediatric population

Abstract: Methodological studies investigating transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) in paediatric populations are limited. Therefore, we investigated in a paediatric population whether stimulation success of multichannel tDCS over the lDLPFC depends on concurrent task performance and individual head anatomy. In a randomised, sham-controlled, double-blind crossover study 22 healthy participants (10–17 years) received 2 mA multichannel anodal tDCS (atDCS) ove… Show more

“…Studies conducted in children have not reported more adverse effects than observed in adults ( Andrade et al, 2014 , Moliadze et al, 2015a , Moliadze et al, 2015b , Splittgerber et al, 2020a , Splittgerber et al, 2021 , Splittgerber et al, 2020b ). Special attention should be paid to muscle jerks on awakening by questioning adolescents and their parents in order to detect evidence of myoclonic epilepsy, which may indicate greater risks with tDCS ( Sierawska et al, 2020 , Splittgerber et al, 2020b ).…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Future work could be done in order to establish a relationship between the electrophysiological profiles and functional outcomes. A hypothesis would be based on the transfer stimulation effects from stimulated WM network involved in the Flanker task to the WM network components involved in N-Back task 68,[91][92][93] , and the response dependency to the brain's stage of development since for example Clusters 3 and 4 have different neurophysiological characteristics and show opposite results 68,94 .…”

“…The total stimulation current consisted of anodal 2mA (milliAmper) during 20 minutes, with a 30 seconds of ramp up and down at the beginning and end of the stimulation (see Figure 3). The interested reader can find details on the DLPFC 68 and the IFG 69 montages in the referred works.…”
