Meta-Analysis of Implementation Intentions Interventions in Promoting Physical Activity among University Students

Abstract: Implementation intentions (II) have demonstrated their efficacy in promoting physical activity (PA) among various populations, including adults, the general population, and those with chronic conditions. However, there is a dearth of meta-analyses examining this efficacy among university students. This meta-analysis aims to determine the effectiveness of II interventions in improving PA among university students. “…The results of this review, conducted with adolescents, corroborate the findings from the general population [ 13 , 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 ] and demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions in overcoming barriers to PA, such as time management re-education [ 117 ], encouragement and guidance on PA benefits, social support from friends and family, and the provision of adequate equipment and facilities, which, in turn, influence socioeconomic barriers [ 106 ]. Consistent with a previous review on school-based interventions aimed at increasing PA among adolescents [ 35 ], strategies such as PA sessions, educational resources, environmental modifications, peer support, and teacher training were widely adopted, leading to improved outcomes.…”

“…A previous study identified an intervention mismatch in wealthy countries compared to those with greater social vulnerability and population potential [ 132 ]. A previous study identified a discrepancy in intervention implementation between wealthy countries and those with greater social vulnerability and population potential [ 116 ]. Consequently, developed countries tend to implement more interventions to mitigate barriers than low- and middle-income countries [ 111 ], potentially enhancing the population-level impact of health promotion.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…In contrast to our findings, Ziari et al ( 32 ) found that their participants’ knowledge of PA and attitude toward PA were significantly low. In order to promote PA on campus, it appears that the integration of implementation intentions with e-health platforms and the application of customized and comprehensive intervention models may prove sustainable ( 41 , 42 ).…”

“…Apart from this, factors such as the type of scale used to assess the outcome variables ( Li et al, 2023 ; Sun et al, 2023 ), sample size ( Fox et al, 2020 ; Liu et al, 2021 ; White et al, 2019 ), year of study ( Peng et al, 2023 ), participants’ age ( Fuller and Kaiser, 2020 ), intervention duration, and disease course ( Liu et al, 2021 ; Peng et al, 2023 ; Zhang et al, 2023 ) all had a significant effect on the intervention. Moderating variables on the effect of the intervention was also a primary objective of this study.…”
