Joint Measurability of Generalized Measurements Implies Classicality

Abstract: The fact that not all measurements can be carried out simultaneously is a peculiar feature of quantum mechanics and responsible for many key phenomena in the theory, such as complementarity or uncertainty relations. For the special case of projective measurements quantum behavior can be characterized by the commutator but for generalized measurements it is not easy to decide whether two measurements can still be understood in classical terms or whether they show already quantum features. We prove that generali… Show more

“…First, it shows that the non-classicality of quantum measurements is not sufficient in general to generate nonclassical correlations, in the sense of violating a Bell inequality. This is in contrast with recent results [17][18][19] proving a one-to-one relation between non joint measurability and quantum steering, a weaker notion of quantum nonlocality. Second, our work shows that the direct connection between the quantum violation of the CHSH inequality (the simplest Bell inequality) and non joint measurability of two binary POVMs proven in Ref.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…This shows that for any set of POVMs that is not n simulable, one can always find an entangled state such that the resulting assemblage is not n preparable. Again, this generalizes some previous results stating that any incompatible set of POVMs can lead to steering [9,10], which corresponds to the case n = 1 of the proposition below.…”

“…Meanwhile, it provides valuable insight on the relations between entanglement, steering, and Bell nonlocality. It also helps explain the relation between steering and incompatibility of observables, which complements several recent studies [15,21,30,31].…”
