Factors Associated with Evidence‐Based Clinical Questions Presented in a Vertically Integrated Seminar Series at a U.S. Dental School

Abstract: The Basic Science/Clinical Science Spiral Seminar Series (BaSiCSsss) was implemented at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2013. In the series, teams of dental students from all four years presented components of a clinical case, supported by evidence-based dentistry concepts. The role of the third-year student on each team was to present questions based on the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) method to support the treatment plan for the selected case. The primary aim of this stu… Show more

“…Similar to the BaSiCSsss model used in a US dental school where predoctoral students were grouped to present a seminar as a team, 3,4 residents in the Pedodontics Department at Vishnu Dental College, Andhra Pradesh, India, were organized into six teams, with each team consisting of three residents, one from each year of the residency program. Each team is assigned to present a case.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…One student from each academic class is assigned a portion of the patient-based presentation supported by evidencebased dentistry concepts. 16 The students are responsible for presenting a comprehensive patient clinical case to their peers and faculty members including medical/dental history, clinical and radiographic findings, evidence-based treatment plans, and executed treatment plan. Additionally, the fourth-year dental student is required to create two integrated test questions based on their clinical case according to the JCNDE INBDE test question guidelines adapted by TUSDM.…”

“…The Basic Science/Clinical Science Spiral Seminar Series (BaSiCSsss) was introduced to TUSDM in 2013 with the objective of initiating team building, leadership, and critical thinking skills among students of each clinical year (D1, D2, D3, and D4) working collaboratively on a clinical case under the mentorship of one basic science and one clinical science faculty. One student from each academic class is assigned a portion of the patient‐based presentation supported by evidence‐based dentistry concepts 16 . The students are responsible for presenting a comprehensive patient clinical case to their peers and faculty members including medical/dental history, clinical and radiographic findings, evidence‐based treatment plans, and executed treatment plan.…”
