Factors affecting antenatal care attendance in Soweto, Johannesburg: The three-delay model

Abstract: Methods: An exploratory, descriptive and qualitative research design was used, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 pregnant women and four women who had recently given birth. Results: Findings indicate delays in seeking care due to factors such as pregnancy unawareness, waiting for visible signs, and fear of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing. Challenges such as transportation difficulties, distance to clinics, and facility conditions further impeded the initiation of antenatal care. Late ini… Show more

“…Gaps in communication and delays in medical attention echo existing literature on healthcare barriers in low-resource settings. 24 , 26 , 40 These findings suggest a need for more consistent training in respectful maternity care and grief-sensitive communication among healthcare workers.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Fifthly, it is crucial to educate pregnant women about the need for antenatal care. In South Africa, over 68.3% of pregnant women attend antenatal care before 20 weeks of pregnancy [ 27 ]; however, there is a need to aim at a 100% uptake. The use of community-based healthcare workers and preventing barriers to access to prenatal care will improve antenatal clinic attendance [ 5 , 28 ].…”

“…Antenatal care offers a variety of essential services aimed at promoting the best possible health outcomes for both the mother and the fetus. These services include administering micronutrient supplements, such as iron and folic acid, to prevent nutritional deficiencies; providing important vaccinations to protect against infectious diseases; and offering counseling and testing for HIV to facilitate early detection and management (Myburgh et al, 2024). Consistent attendance at ANC appointments is associated with significant improvements in health outcomes, particularly through the early identification of complications, which can help reduce maternal illness and mortality.…”
