Association between anxiety and depression with chronic periodontitis

Abstract: Background & Objectives: It is thought that chronic stress negatively affects immune response efficacy which in turn cause an imbalance between host and parasite leading to periodontal breakdown. The study aims to investigate the association between anxiety and depression with chronic periodontitis.Materials & Methods: This was a cross sectional study comprising of 350 individuals of both sexes, above 25 years of age. The study population was divided into two groups. Group 2 consisted of those subjects… Show more

“…The overall mean age was 38.99 years in Group A & 32.88 years in Group B. This data was in conformity with the academic work conducted by Shreshtha S et al 8 where mean age of subjects of Group 1 -Periodontitis group was higher as compared to Group 2 which was statistically significant & had reported higher prevalence and severity of periodontal disease with increasing age. The cumulative nature of the periodontal support loss indicating the time of exposure to the causative causes may be the cause of the older sample's periodontitis.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Study result in India revealed that cigarette smoking is associated with depression [ 19 ]. Also study conducted in USA showed that smoking was associated with a nearly two-fold increased risk of depression relative to both never smokers and former smokers [ 54 ].…”

“…The most frequently reported factors correlated with depression and anxiety among patients with dental diseases were being females [ 15 , 17 , 18 ], older age [ 18 ], less education [ 18 ], less income [ 16 , 18 ], not having a dental visit within the year [ 18 ], periodontitis [ 19 ], poor oral hygiene [ 20 ], smoking [ 19 ] and alcohol use [ 21 ].…”

“…e size of the effect of dental plaque on CAL was large in the general population sample and pooled sample and was medium in the 2 patient samples. Dental plaque is the primary etiological factor of periodontal disease in patients with depression [51] and in patients without depression [52]. Its accumulation causes inflammation and CAL [6,12,42].…”
